Heroquest larp/lrp Campaign - The Towers of Orin Rakatha

The Valley peoples first came to the plane of Orin Rakatha some years ago, when they had to flee their own plane (Murandir, also referred to as 'the Valley'). Orin Rakatha was already home to a number of different races, all of whom had differing views - and some strange alliances.

The peoples of Orin Rakatha dwell in Towers. These strange, extra dimensional spaces provide shelter from both the madness-inducing Mists that frequently surge across the lands and the masses of Hordelings that gather to attack groups out in the open. The Towers are allocated by the strange and secretive beings known as the 'Mystics' who are thought to dwell on the central isle (although no-one has actually seen them first hand). Whether a nation/people can continue to hold a Tower is decided at the 'Time of Reckoning' (held once each calendar year) when the status of its population is measured - if a Tower does not have enough status, they lose their Tower. Towerless people have no standing in the world and as such can be hunted as outlaws, so there is often much tension at the Time of Reckoning.

In ancient time the Mystics laid down certain laws to govern Orin Rakatha. Over the centuries much of these has been lost and the Mystics have not seen fit to re-explain them, however the Laws that are still held in regard include:

  • Each people of a Tower shall be known by their Colours. (It is acceptable for only half of those in a group to openly display their colours.)
  • None shall wear Colours that are not their own. (This law is observed by all and will bring swift destruction to any Tower flouting this law.)
  • Those met on the open plane not recognisable by Colours shall be held in regard as if without Tower. (If less than half of your group display Tower Colours then you will be treated as Towerless).
  • Justice shall be withheld from those without Tower, they are without rights by law. (This means you cannot trade with them nor can they stay within Waystations.)
  • Neither Towers nor their yield shall be used to succour those without Tower. (It is not permitted to trade with or aid Towerless in any form.)
  • Towers shall not diminish themselves by taking up those without Tower. (This Law has been much interpreted but seems rather to restrict the amount of those taken in rather than prohibit it all together.)
  • Mist Hordelings and the Unliving shall not hold Status. (This Law was reconfirmed in recent years at a Time of Reckoning, with Unliving thought to refer to most types of Undead and pure Elementals.)

A map of Orin Rakatha is available, showing the locations of each of the 'known' Towers.

The Valley people themselves now hold three Towers known as Wolfhold, The Village, and the White Retreat, each of which has a different style of government (and generally parallels the 'evil', 'neutral' and 'good' spheres).
